Dear Norwalk-La Mirada Families and Staff,
Welcome to the 2020-21 academic year! First and foremost, I am honored and deeply privileged to be serving as the Superintendent for Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District. While no one could have predicted the COVID-19 pandemic and how much it would impact our lives, we are looking forward to beginning the school year with a revamped Distance Learning program on Thursday, August 13th. You may access resources for the first day of school by clicking this link
. However, do not hesitate to contact your school if you have questions or need support.
I am fully cognizant of the challenges and opportunities ahead of us. However, I also know that our staff are caring, knowledgeable, and hard-working professionals who will ensure that every child is provided with positive and meaningful interactions as well as a high-quality learning experience. Over the summer, our teachers participated in a variety of virtual Professional Development courses in order to prepare for Distance Learning. We look forward to partnering with our families and community to provide students with the knowledge, skills, experiences, and opportunities to allow them to be successful and responsible members of our society.
This year we will remain intentional in meeting our goals, supporting the development of literacy, math, and career readiness. In addition, we will frame these goals in the context of Distance Learning and integrate social-emotional learning. We understand how social and emotional well-being optimizes brain development for academic success, especially considering the current COVID-19 conditions and limited social interactions. Our students will continue to have many opportunities to grow and learn in a caring and inspiring environment. Through the instructional and academic leadership of our principals, teachers, and support staff, we will ensure that every student continues to thrive.
This year’s focus areas are:
1. Promote academic discourse across literacy, math, and college & career ready coursework.
2. Use technology to enhance teaching and learning.
3. Integrate social and emotional learning in ways that are developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate.
4. Create a culture of collaboration.
As we face a new and unusual school year, I know that together, our remarkable flexibility and resiliency will keep us moving forward. I, along with the Board of Education and NLMUSD staff, remain committed and passionate about meeting the needs of all our students and families by providing opportunities that will prepare everyone for their journey ahead. I look forward to sharing our successes and achievements with you! Lastly, our Return-to-School Blueprint can be found on our District website by clicking this link.
Thank you for your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times. Please stay healthy and safe. I wish everyone a great first day back to school!
Every Student. Future Ready. Our Promise!
With NLM Pride,
John M. Lopez
